VULGAR DISPLAY OF POWER (ATCO, 1992)
A New Level is the second track on Pantera’s Vulgar Display of Power album.
For some reason, when I first heard the album — and for a few years after — I didn’t pay much attention to it. But over time, I found myself liking it more and more. Today, it’s one of the best songs — if not the best — of the entire Pantera catalogue.
The music is catchy like an STD, but what really got me hooked are the lyrics. They started making more and more sense the deeper I got into graffiti, gaining confidence and trust in both my work and my way of doing it. I guess that’s what Phil Anselmo is singing about here — just from a musician’s perspective. Either way, I can totally relate. And in 1994 me and my crew mate Dams went and painted the title.
