ACTIVE: 1990-
Amorphis is an absolutely killer metal band from Finland. I’ve been following them since early 1993, when they were still playing actual death metal.
They released quite a few good albums during the nineties. After that they started travelling on a less-metal path for several years. Fortunately, they got their focus back on the heavier side in 2005 with a new vocalist, Tomi Joutsen. And I gotta admit, after this “minor” change they’ve only gotten better, releasing one good album after another and jumping from the so-called underground to the mainstream — now being one of the largest Finnish metal bands, also recognized outside Finland.
In 2015, when I was working on an exhibition related to bands that had played at Nosturi, now an extinct venue in Helsinki, I naturally had to include Amorphis in it. Like with the other paintings in the exhibition, I based the color theme of my work on the album artwork of the presented bands. For Amorphis, I chose the dark greyish and silver tones from their 2007 release, Silent Waters.
