ACTIVE: 1999–
The Project Hate MCMXCIX is (literally) a project — or an entity, if you will — led by swedish multitalented and very productive musician Lord K. Philipson.
Since 1999 the only permanent members have been Philipson and vocalist Jörgen Sandström (known from Grave, Entombed, Vicious Art, Torture Division and others). Philipson writes and composes all the music, performs most instruments, and gathers various guest musicians around the world for each album.
I discovered them in early 2001 through the Entombed website, where Sandström was listed with his other projects, The Project Hate MCMXCIX being one of these. So I clicked the links, hoping to find samples of their music. Once I heard their material online, I was instantly hooked. The combination of brutal death metal growls, eerie female vocals, crushing guitars and, on top of all that, unexpected electronic elements was something I had never heard before — and it worked perfectly. Their lyrics, fiercely anti-religious yet thoughtful, drew me in even further.
At the time I struggled to find their debut album anywhere in Finland, but eventually managed to get a copy. From then on, The Project Hate MCMXCIX became my favorite band — a position they still hold more than two decades later. Over the years I’ve also had the privilege of working with them on their website, album covers and various illustrations, and of becoming close friends with the people behind the demonic music.
Oh, I also made a special feature related to this band, check it out!
